When the only option you can see at the time drops out from under you, it sucks. After making a dreaded phone call that turned out to spiral me into a world of self-doubt and uncertainty, I was again lost in how I was going to achieve the goals for the $1000 project. I reached out to contacts to explore what types of work people are looking for. I got all types of responses from people either needing work done or their personal thoughts on what I should do for work.
Many of the options I had would be good to just start generating money. Ultimately, I decided that none of those options would lead me to a destination that allowed me to be able to explore the boundaries of this project. I wanted to use the design methods I was studying in class for a currently established service to see what results could be generated. So I focused on contacts that run small businesses . This time I got a response from a contact looking to grow their business and was looking for marketing services. We set a meeting and this time (before the meeting) I was sure the client was aware of my intentions of being compensated and that this was a professional meeting.
The meeting was great. I was more confident and self-assured this time around. We set terms to the agreement and signed a contract for hourly work at a set rate. I felt extremely positive and at a new high with a $1000 contract in my pocket. This was the first time that I have ever been contracted to do design work, advertisement, or business development. It was amazing and things began to feel like they were moving forward.
When I left I immediately began to reach out to begin interviews with people that my client provides services for. I made phone calls to people who work in the field or users of that service. I was able to get some good information about important information to use and what are valuable considerations for my client’s advertisements.
Everything was running smooth except there is that one lingering feeling in the back of my mind. Something that I couldn’t figure out at the time but telling me that there is something more that I can be doing for this client. Something that I am not aware of yet or that the client even knows is possible. I know this because in school I am not studying how to just market a business there is more. Eventually, I came to understand that I want to create a deliverable that will change the trajectory of this business. Now I just got to figure out how.No Comments »
